year-long wardrobe essentials…
In continuing my effort to live with less… I found this post on Tumblr this fine Monday morning…and feel inspired to get rid of even more.
Look how interchangeable everything is…
I don’t even want to think about how many coats I have in my closet(s).

Follow Through
Confession: During my one year hiatus from buying new clothes, three months in, I went shopping in Austin, Texas and purchased a shirt. A beautiful, hand-embroidered Mexican blouse, which in my defense, I have been on the hunt for since our vacation in Baja California Sur two years ago.

So last weekend, BB and I had a little… disagreement… he commented that I never follow through with anything. Ouch. That one hurt a bit. However, I’m honest enough with myself to admit…several days later…that he was correct.
I have a lot of great ideas. A lot of good intentions. But I don’t always make the time to follow through. To make them a priority.
Hey - I’m working on it.
Today I decided to reflect on whether I am truly commited to no shopping for a full year. Will I stick with it and make it for the year? I can’t say for sure. Right now, I feel very committed. I am avoiding the usual shops that suck me in. I unsubscribed from the store emails. Unfollowed them on Facebook and Twitter. I feel different about the clothes in my closet. I am rediscovering things I’ve held on to for years. And I am parting with clothes that I know I’ll never wear again.
More importantly, I feel different about my body. Instead of shopping to accomodate my lack of working out, I am actually working out. Running. Who thought that would EVER happen??
This is the only “frivolous” clothing purchase I have made since July. I don’t regret it one bit.
I didn’t backslide into a shopping frenzy, as I feared I would. I am feeling the effects of my project - my restraint. I don’t get the initial anxiety I felt in the beginning when I saw the new Fall lines from Madewell and J. Crew popping up all over blogs, Facebook and Pinterest. I look at labels now to see where items were made. If it’s made in China. I’m out. No thank you. And by the way, how can ANYONE justify charging $98/$108/$188 for a shirt or a dress made in China? I’m talking to you Anthropologie!
I’ll have you know THIS shirt was hand made in Marfa, Texas.

Week 1. Day 2. Running by choice. I no longer think “I hate this, I hate this, I hate this”. Big step. I figure. I run because I can. Because I am capable. And because I love pork and gelato.

Week 1. Day 1. Me after my first run…by choice.

Full disclosure: I own a lot of t-shirts that I almost never wear. But only one of them is red. @artbyellengreene this is for you… (Taken with Instagram)
